Centenary Choir pictured above Welcome
Formed in 1904 and reputedly the oldest male choir in Cornwall, Marazion Apollo Male Choir is based in the ancient charter town of Marazion, close to Penzance, and faces the Jewel in the Cornish crown, St Michael’s Mount, in Mount’s Bay.
This is the island castle home of our president, Mr James St.Aubyn, whose family owned the castle from the date of the restoration of the monarchy, 1660 until 1954. The property was then given to the National Trust by the 3rd Lord St. Levan, together with a large endowment.
The family continues to lease accommodation within the castle from the National Trust.
In 2003, our former president the 4th Lord St. Levan, left the island to allow his nephew James with his wife and children, to take over the family lease.
The choir practises every Monday evening from 7.30 pm in the Town Hall. Visitors are always welcome to come and sit in on practise nights just to listen and if you feel you might like to join us then try singing with us for a week or two before committing yourself to a decision.
In 2004,with Timothy Hosken at the helm, the choir celebrated its Centenary. Their most recent CD, ‘Let There Be Music', was produced in the spring.
In June, to celebrate county-wide, the choir shared a concert in Truro with Polperro Fishermen, St.Columba Celtic and Tintagel Orpheus. In July, in two wonderful concerts in Porthleven and Penzance, the choir was delighted to share the stage with international tenor, John Treleaven, a former member.
In September, the Apollo Choir enjoyed a memorable tour - to Weston-super-Mare to sing with Cheddar MVC; to St.Helens to sing with Haydock MVC, and finally to Wrexham to sing with Rhos Orpheus and Denise Leigh (winner of TV’s ‘Operatunity’).
In November, the five Penwith choirs celebrated the Centenary in St.Just Chapel before a full house and were joined on this memorable occasion by another former member, tenor Peter Ferris.
